Yemeni Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik vowed on Monday that the interim capital Aden would witness significant improvement in light of the Riyadh Agreement, which paves the way for a new phase of stability, security and institutional reforms.

“There is a benefit for all parties to implement this agreement,” Abdulmalik said as he presided over a meeting of the board of the University of Aden to discuss the conditions of the university where more than 32,000 students are enrolled.

The meeting, attended also by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Hussein Basalamah and the Minister of Tourism Muhammad Qubati, addressed the concerns of faculty members, mechanisms for improving education and scientific research and developing the university's infrastructure, in addition to putting an end to the repeated attacks on the university's campus and other properties.

Yemen’s Saba news agency said the Prime Minister listened to proposals to improve the conditions of the teaching staff regarding medical insurance, developing scholarships and advancing the educational process.

He praised the pioneering role of the University of Aden in the educational and development process, appreciating the efforts of the staff to advance higher education and scientific research.

Abdulmalik said the government should work on increasing the share of the university in the 2020 fiscal budget, with an aim to improve the academic process.

Last month, the PM and his ministers returned to the port city of Aden under the Riyadh Agreement that was signed with the Southern Transitional Council (STC).

The agreement stipulates that the STC share half of the portfolios of a new cabinet that would be comprised of 24 ministers. Currently, there are more than 37 ministries in Yemen.
